1. EDITORIAL
Well, it grieves me no end having to start this edition off
with an apology – for the shoddy proofreading of the last
newsletter. Another example of trying to do things too quickly. Oh
well, let’s see if I can do a bit better this time around! The
band, as I’m sure you’ll all be delighted to know! – has
kept very busy since we last wrote with our gigs including the De
Beers Inter-Mines sports weekend, a farewell gig for one of our
strongest supporters at the local Hockey Club and an absolutely
mind-blowing afternoon at The Don, also here in Oranjemund. The
Don has seen many a BEDROCK gig but few have been more festive
than last weekend’s. Despite the fact that it was a Public
Holiday in Namibia and many folk were out of town, our loyal
following emerged in numbers adequate enough to create a
sensational party – and that it certainly was! If you want to
know more get to the DIARY section of our web site at
www.bedrockband.com
Apart from preparing for the recording of this year’s CD
release we have some exciting gigs coming up, including our debut
at Rosh Pinah and our planned appearance at one of Namibia’s
latest “Battle Of The Bands” contests – read all about these
exciting prospects in our STOP PRESS section.

BEDROCK’s New Material Gets ‘Em Rockin’
We are delighted to be able to say that the new material we
have written for our forthcoming CD release is going down
extremely well at our gigs. There are some intriguing titles
amongst the new works - Rock ‘n Roll Man II, Nothing Worries Me
(a little reggae number which is attracting attention wherever we
perform it), Nobody There, Mobile Party, Crowd Invasion, Yeah Yeah
and Goin’ Home, which has quickly established itself as the
closing number to our gigs. Most of these songs are real rockers
so there’ll be no place to hide with our forthcoming release!
There’re a host of other new songs being polished off for public
performance including Rickshaw Baby Blues and What Crap Is That?
So, if you are one of those lucky enough to be able to get to our
gigs listen out for all those brand new sounds and let us know
what you think of them.
BEDROCK Enter The Studio – 02 June 2002
Yep, folks, this is the date the band will be taking itself
into Dining Room Studios to commence work on this year’s CD
release which promises to be a real contrast to RECOVERY. It is
hoped that the CD will be available for sale in September so keep
an eye on this space and, of course, our web site. If you see DO
NOT DISTURB signs on our doors, please do just that!
BEDROCK Set To Rock Rosh Pinah
Yes it’s true – BEDROCK will be making their inaugural
visit to the ‘corner stone’ (Rosh Pinah) on Saturday, 25 May,
2002. This must surely be a first for that isolated, hot and dusty
town – a rock band visiting what is traditionally an extremely
conservative and traditional area by way of music taste. But this
is what BEDROCK does best – pushes back the conventional
boundaries, bringing the sounds of classic rock to the
farthest-flung points of Namibia…and some in South Africa too,
come to think of it. Our good friend Grant has organised this one
for us so all you okes sweating it on the Skorpion Mine project
had better get down to your local venue to have yourselves a rave
on the 25th. See ya all there!
BEDROCK Launches Its Own “Pop Idol” Talent Search!
Before you’re all seized with panic attacks at the sight of
next week’s adverts for new members for the band let us just
assure you all that this is a succession planning exercise. The
reason for this is that, firstly, Mike will be away again for the
best part of two months over June – August. Whereas in the past
we have foregone gigs when band members are away, this time we
have taken the decision to keep gigging in Mike’s absence due to
the amount of work that’s coming in. So, in the short term, we’re
hoping to get some cover for Mike who can stand in for him whilst
he’s away.
Secondly, in the longer term there is a likelihood that Mike
may be transferred from Oranjemund at the end of the year. In
order to pre-empt this we are hoping that one of the stand-in
musicians we’re looking for will be able become a permanent
member of the line-up should Mike leave. Very pro-active, I’m
sure you’ll all agree.
BEDROCK Enter Namibia’s “Battle Of The Bands” Competition
Exciting local news is that the community of Keetmanshoop has
decided to stage an annual festival intending to create some
excitement about the town in the hope of stimulating local
business, economic and recreational activities. The event will be
planned along the lines of similar occasions in South Africa, such
as the Karroo Festival. At this stage the weekend of 9/10 August,
2002, has been pencilled in as the date so, if any of you are
planning to be in or around Keetmanshoop that weekend, drop in and
participate in what promises to be loads of fun.
3. SOME (MORE) USELESS FACTS ABOUT BEDROCK
· In 1995 the band did an Alice Cooper spoof in the local
variety show of that year which was called Alice In Oranjeland.
They covered the well known Alice number, “Be My Lover”, and
Charlie Piggott went the whole hog dressing up as closely as he
could to Alice. With him assuming this role and needing to be free
of his guitar playing responsibilities, his axe was passed over to
Darryl Harrison, a good friend of the band’s, who managed to
keep the rhythm going in what turned out to be quite a hectic
performance. The song’s never been quite the same since!
· The band’s first lunchtime/afternoon gig at The Don took
place on 7th December, 1996, when, as a three piece comprising of
Charlie Piggott, Pete Shout & Eddie Heusdens, they played to
20 people for two hours. Since then, Bedrock’s monthly gigs have
become the place to be for Oranjemund’s party crowd . How “mighty
oaks (okes?) grow from tiny acorns”!!
· One of the band’s “hottest” gigs – literally – was
at The Don on 1st August, 1988, when, in extremely hot East
weather conditions, the band managed to get the crowd onto their
feet and to party in horrendously warm conditions. Fortunately the
band managed to keep cool with adequate supplies of cold, brown
liquid and even the piping hot Springbok potjie sold out!!

We’ll leave this one over until next edition – I’m short
of reading time!!
5. ON THE TURNTABLE
Local Sounds
· The Diamond Files 1 & 2 – David Scobie
David’s ability to pass himself off as Neil Diamond is well
known wherever he has been and these two CD’s encapsulate his
amazing ability in this regard. Brimful of Diamond classics – or
are they Scobie classics – his talent just continues to amaze. I’ve
been passing these two CD’s around the local community and many
a late night argument has ensured, either disputing that it’s
not Neil Diamond performing or arguing whether Steve Hofmeyer is
better at it than David. To my mind, it’s no contest – Dave
Scobie wins “hands down”. The CD’s are available at certain
music stores – I found mine at the Sandton branch of Musica in
Johannesburg. Nicely priced, too.
By the way, I’ve been chatting to David lately and he’s
looking for backers to assist him in bringing his show, The
Diamond Files, on tour to South Africa. If any of you have
contacts or connections that may be able to assist with this
request, please let me know. Obviously, with matters in Zimbabwe
being in the state that they presently are, arranging such
projects is a major challenge at present. I’m sure David would
appreciate any help he could get.
International Sounds
· DRIVE TIME – Various Artists
I picked this disc up at Avatar Music in Rondebosch for the
princely sum of R29.99 and it’s a real winner. Produced in the
UK, originally for the Marks & Spencer chain stores, the CD
contains 18 fine tracks of music from Elton John’s “I’m
Still Standing” to Joe Jackson’s “Stepping Out”. Along the
way there’s room for such well known, and diverse, tunes as Tom
Robinson’s “2-4-6-8 Motorway”, Steve Winwood’s “Higher
Love”, Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”,
Blondie’s “Call Me” and even Talking Heads’ “Road To
Nowhere”. So many of these collections are disappointing but
this is a real gem featuring the original artists and recordings.
Keep an eye out for it – at under R30.00 you’d be crazy to say
“No”.

6. VOICEBOX
Thought we’d share a recent e-mail from one of our loyal
supporters with you…
“Hello you marvellous gentlemen
I'd personally like to thank each and every one of you for
allowing myself
and (No names!! – Ed.) to make use of your microphones! I've
recently been visiting the
Bedrock site and can't get over how "at home" I feel.
Sort of like a
"part-of-the-band" feeling.
Saturday was one of the most enjoyable days I've had since I
fell pregnant!
If it weren't for all of you, it would never have been possible
(No, not
falling pregnant - for having so much fun on Saturday - he he
he)
I feel honored wearing my bedrock t-shirt and cap.
Thanks guys!”
