1. EDITORIAL
Well, if last edition’s mention at the passing of the Who’s
John Entwhistle wasn’t enough bad news for the year, then the
additional news of singer Anneline Malebo’s certainly is. For
those of you who don’t recognise the name, Anneline was a member
of the South African group JOY who had a monumental hit in the
1970’s with Paradise Road. The song was also recently covered by
contestants in the local Pop Idols programme. It is reported that
Anneline died from AIDS, contracted two years ago when she raped.
Paradise Road was written by South African music stalwarts, Patric
van Blerk and Fransua Roos, and gained JOY a massive hit locally
(reported 75 000 copies of the single and 20 000 of the album) and
opened the door for their entry to the British entertainment
scene. Paradise Road is surely one of local music’s evergreens
and is a just reminder of the talents of Anneline Malebo and her
co-members Felicia Marion and Thoko Ndlovu.

“So Where’s The Party?” Starts to Rock Solid
BEDROCK’s 2002 CD release – to be titled “So Where’s
The Party?” is rapidly taking shape and will be ready for
release sometime in late October or early November. Unlike their
previous CD, “Recovery”, which was a mixed bag, this release
is firmly planted in the band’s rockin’ roots – with just a
tad of tantalizing reggae included! All the tracks, once again,
are original compositions composed by the band with axeman Kenny
Ramage contributing the lion’s share. Regular Bedrock gig-goers
will recognise many of the songs which have been revealed at live
performances in recent months. Amongst them are “Mobile Party”,
“Yeah, Yeah”, “Nobody There”, “What Crap Is That?”,
“Rock ‘n Roll Man II”, “Nothing Worries Me” and “Crowd
Invasion”. Once again the band’s sense of humour abounds and
the listener’s enjoyment is guaranteed – you need never ask
“So Where’s The Party?” again because the answer will be in
your CD player.
BEDROCK Top Namibian Band At “Battle Of The Band”
On the 10 August, 2002, the band participated as a three-piece
in the first “Battle Of The Bands” event to be staged at
Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia. With guitarist, Mike Millad,
being away on a protracted study period the band were honour-bound
to meet their longstanding undertaking to participate in this
event which was sponsored by South African Breweries. All-in-all
seven bands competed, six of which were from Namibia. The seventh
band – and eventual winners – was the Canyon Delta Blues
outfit which was a combination of a local drummer together with
some of the leading lights of Stellenbosch’s Delta Blues band.
The Bedrock trio put on an assured performance and had the
distinction of being the only band to perform original material,
enjoying a very positive response from the audience. They were
ultimately placed second and were overjoyed at their cheque of
N$1000.00 and five cases of the sponsor’s “finest”! Thanks
to SAB for their sponsorship, as well as the good folk of
Keetmanshoop whose positive response and support made the occasion
as memorable as it was.
BEDROCK & Tutaleni
Following their success at the Keetmanshoop rock band contest,
the band were interviewed by Namibian television for their
entertainment magazine programme, TUTALENI. Despiote various
undertakings this material has still to be flighted so, friends,
please be patient and keep watching TUTALENI – Thursday evenings
at 21:00. We are assured that we will appear sooner or later!
In the meantime NBC television have opened discussions with the
band for a dedicated programme on BEDROCK for one of the channel’s
youth programmes. Watch this space for the next thrilling episode!
BEDROCK To Do The Nashua
After an approach from the sponsors, Nashua, we are able to
confirm that BEDROCK will be performing at the Oranjemund Golf
Club on the afternoon of Sunday, 22 September, 2002, from 16:00.
This is something new that the sponsors are attempting to provide
good entertainment after a full weekend’s golf and will be open
to the general public. So, if you’re down Oranjemund way that
weekend get along to the Golf Club. A part is guaranteed!
BEDROCK Web Site
The band’s web site is constantly revised and updated and,
recently, a “What’s New” panel has been incorporated in the
home page so that you are immediately flagged as to recent
changes. The site also includes regular updates on how the
recording progress for “So Where’s The Party?” is going. Don’t
forget, we are a very amenable band so feedback or constructive
criticism is always welcome.
The “Gigmobile” Is Back!
The final piece of good news for this newsletter is that the
band’s distinctive “19-voetsak” Combi is back on the road
after some major brake repairs. So, if you see her trundling down
the road give chase – she could only be heading for the next
party!
3. SOME (MORE) USELESS FACTS ABOUT BEDROCK
Bassman Pete drinks Tafel. Lots of it. Occasionally,
pumpelmussen too!
Axeman Kenny also drinks Tafel. Lots of it. Occasionally, white
wine, whiskey and pumpelmussen too. He also likes the occasional
cigarette.
Guitarist, Mike, likes takeaways. Lots of them. In fact, he
probably has spent enough money at “Seagulls” to demand shares
in the business. He also has the odd beer but prefers fruit juice.
Lots of it.
Eddie doesn’t like drinking anything. Apart from red wine.
Sometimes lots of it. He is happiest, though, with the occasional
Windhoek Light or Tafel Heavy. Eddie has a black belt for cooking
– he burns everything!
Pete & Kenny are heavily into muscle and body building. The
results are slow in presenting themselves, however, if they
continue to carry the band’s equipment as regularly as they do
something has got to happen. (We won’t say “give” in case it’s
their backs or knees). Eddie prefers lighter pursuits like
carrying his drumsticks. And Mike? Well he also gets into body
building sometimes but is hoping greasy takeaways will have more
visible impact than carry the band’s gear!
4. ON THE TURNTABLE
Joe Walsh – Little Did He Know (Greatest Hits)
This is an interesting compilation of Joe’s compositions over
the years, including a couple of songs he created for the Eagles.
His scope is wide and varied from pure rockers with clear
influences from bands like Led Zep to soft rock.
Reggae Greats – Jimmy Cliff
As one would expect, this is pure, unadulterated reggae from
Jimmy Cliff and is “feel good” at its very best. With old time
favourites such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want It” and
“Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” this disk is sure to get the party
going.
Booker T & The MG’s - The Very Best Of…
The product of an original collaboration between Steve Cropper
and Donald “Duck” Dunn “Booker T & The MG’s”
contributed many fine tunes over the years to the international
music scene, not least of which are “Time Is Tight” and “Green
Onions”. It doesn’t stop there for there were many more, all
of which feature on this release including standards such as “Groovin”
and “Mrs Robinson”. Take a trip back in time…
